Rapid7 buys Metasploit Project

I just read on Dark Reading that HD Moore just sold the Metasploit Project to Rapid7. The first question after reading the article is, what does this mean to security researchers using Metasploit? Luckily it seems that HD Moore is going to keep it public and he stated

“My goal is if we decide to go commercial, all the features and components are going into open-source" Metasploit as well, Moore says.

If true, this purchase should greatly enhance metasploit value and capabilities to security researchers. If not, I am sure the open source community will create a replacement or use other existing frameworks such as Security Forest.

Either way I wonder what competitors to Rapid7 are thinking such as Core Security, as this purchase has the potential of affecting their overall profitability in this troubling economy.
